Things You Should Never Do After Eating

After a satisfying meal, many of us just want to lay down for the rest of the night and watch a great movie or TV show. Did you know that some things we do after eating can have serious consequences on our health? As much as we love indulging in a nice nap after a meal, it’s actually a really bad habit!

Smoke

Unfortunately for some people, smoking is still a thing. While it’s probably one of the most damaging things you can do to your lungs, if you’re going to do it, at least wait a couple hours after eating. This is because the nicotine in cigarettes binds to the excess oxygen that is necessary for digestion, which then allows your body to absorbs more carcinogens than normal. According to studies, smoking right after a meal is the same as smoking ten cigarettes at once. It also increases the risk of bowel and lung cancer.

Laying down

Let’s have a nap – the first thought most of the people have after a large meal. A long comfy nap, sounds so good, but did you know how bad can be for your health? Laying down after a heavy meal can only provoke bloating, acid reflux and discomfort. A study that was made at the University of Ioannina Medical School come to the conclusion that it would be the best if people wait at least 30 minutes before going to bed after a meal. That way they will lower the risk of having a stroke.

Taking a shower

If you were thinking about to take a shower after the meal, forget about it! After having a meal all the energy and the blood flow is focused around the stomach and the intestines in order to digest the food. Do you know what will happen if you take a shower right after eating? The brain will give an order to the blood to rush to the limbs to moderate the temperature, this will lead to bad digestion because of the limited blood flow.

Eat Fruit

You probably thought you could eat fruit at any time, didn’t you? Well, it’s actually best to eat fruit on an empty stomach. This is because fruits require different enzymes to digest, and the simple sugars in fruit need time to be absorbed completely by the body. With nothing else in your belly, you benefit from all the nutrients, fiber, and simple sugars. If you wait until close to or after a meal, however, fruit remains in the stomach for an extended period and rots in the gut. This can cause indigestion, heartburn, burping, and other discomforts.

Go for a walk

There are a lot of people that think that going for a walk after a meal can benefit your body, but the last researches say that this is only partly correct. According to the Department of Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina, people should go for a walk for at least half hour after having a meal and the walk should be around 10 minutes. This way you will avoid heartburns and indigestion.
