Home Remedies To Treat Ulcerative Colitis. Ulcerative colitis is an autoimmune condition that involves an inflammatory bowel caused by inflammation of the colon and rectum. The main cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown. However, it is believed that genetics, immune system, and the environment plays a major role. Stress also tends to aggravate their symptoms.

Symptoms of ulcerative colitis include; rectal bleeding, pus production due to the ulcer, diarrhea, bloody stools, rectal pain, fever, and abdominal discomfort.

Bland Foods

Spicy food can aggravate ulcerative colitis and increase the intensity of flare-ups. Eat bland foods such as mashed potatoes, brown rice, gelatin, puffed rice, cream of wheat, oatmeal, canned vegetables such as asparagus, carrots, spinach, and mushrooms. These foods are easy to digest and may help in keeping your digestive system healthy while providing nourishment to your body.

Licorice Root

Licorice has been used, in Chinese medicine, for thousands of years due to its great healing properties. It helps in reducing inflammation and pain associated with the condition. Simply consume licorice root extract in a dose of 6 grams daily for a 130-pound individual. Do not consume it for more than 4 weeks. Avoid using it during pregnancy or if you have a liver, kidney or heart condition.

Iron And Folic Acid

Iron and folic acid may help in boosting the production of red blood cells in the body to promote healing. Consume foods that are rich in iron such as beef, liver, leafy vegetables, black beans, and egg yolk. Also include foods high in folates such as broccoli, avocados, and beets to boost its level in your body and treat ulcerative colitis.

Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp seed oil is another natural source of omega fatty acids that promote healing and reduces inflammation in the gut. Include 1 teaspoon of the oil in your diet for effective results.


Turmeric contains a substance called curcumin which is anti-inflammatory in nature. Hence consuming turmeric can help in fighting chronic inflammation of the gut. Put some grated turmeric root in a cup of water. Bring it to boil and simmer for another 8-10 minutes. Strain it and add some honey and lemon juice to enhance the taste. Consume this turmeric tea 3 times a day.

Fish Oil

Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids beneficial for treating colitis. It reduces inflammation and soothes the inner lining of the intestines to reduce any flare up. Take about a gram of fish oil supplement for effective results, You may slowly increase your dose to 2-4 grams depending on your condition.


The soothing effect of chamomile helps in reducing pain and inflammation in a fast and effective way. Simply take a cup of boiling water and add 3 teaspoons of dried flowers of chamomile. Steep for 10-12 minutes and strain it into another cup. Drink this tea 3 times a day to get rid of the condition.

Wheatgrass Juice

Wheatgrass juice is highly effective in treating the symptoms of ulcerative colitis. It can reduce diarrhea and rectal bleeding and the associated pain. Start by taking  4 tablespoons of wheatgrass juice every day and gradually increase your doses to up to 3.5 ounces in a day.

A weak immune system is one of the biggest causes of ulcerative colitis. Hence, consuming foods rich in probiotics such as yogurt may help in relieving the symptoms to some extent. It will help in increasing the number of good bacteria in your gut and boosts its health. Use plain cultured yogurt in your diet in moderate amounts to increase your immunity and fight the disease.

Fresh Fruits

No wonder, fruits are the best food for health. Consume fruits like bananas, cooked apples, peaches, avocados, seedless grapes, and soft melons. These are easy to digest and provides dietary fibers and nutrients needed by the body. Avoid consuming fruits like berries, plums, rhubarb, coconut, and dried fruits as these contain a very high amount of fiber which may not be suitable if you are dealing with diarrhea.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is another great remedy for ulcerative colitis. The high amount of monosaturated fats present in olive helps in reducing the symptoms. It also reduces inflammation due to olive oil’s anti-inflammatory properties. Consuming olive oil on a regular basis may also provide added protection against the problem.

To get rid of colitis just add 2-3 tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil to your daily diet.
