Trees are planted grapefruit in Florida in the early 19th century, but Florida is still the largest producer of grapefruit. Grapefruit is rich in vitamin C (about 40 mg of vitamin C per 100 g), and further includes lycopene, limonoid, naringenin, simple sugars, and fibers. Its positive effects come from vitamin C and flavonoids. In addition to these ingredients, rich in vitamins A, B, D, E and K, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, manganese, zinc, copper, and iron. Grapefruit is very rich in nutrients but poor in calories, which makes it very desirable in the daily diet.That’s why it is also popular for weight loss.
Studies have shown that limonoid, a substance containing grapefruit, can prevent tumor formation, helping to fight skin cancer, lungs, breast cancer, mouth cancer, stomach, and colon cancer. Red and yellow grapefruit
Red grapefruit contains lycopene, a known antioxidant. It has been shown that red grapefruit (poured juice or whole fruit) shows better results in cholesterol and triglyceride regulation than yellow grapefruit.The red grapefruit is higher concentrations of bioactive components and polyphenols.A study conducted on a group of volunteers who daily with a meal consumed grapefruit over a period of one month showed visible differences in the results between the group that consumed the yellow grapefruit and those who consumed red.
In the group who eat red grapefruit, cholesterol levels were 15 percent lower, and the level of LDL cholesterol decreased by 20 percent. Yellow grapefruit showed half results. In both groups equally and lowered triglyceride levels.

- Both types of grapefruit positively affect cholesterol levels, but the red grapefruit twice as effective, especially in lowering triglycerides. The experts on the basis of these results concluded that the addition of fresh red grapefruit daily diet is very helpful in treating people with high cholesterol, especially those with high triglycerides.

A large number of medicines interact with the grapefruit, and some medicines combined with grapefruit enhance the effect. Caution is required when:
- taking statins (medicines to treat cholesterol) because grapefruit increases blood drug concentration
- taking medicines for blood pressure, depression (sertraline), allergies, medicines for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and many others.
So far, 85 drugs have been known that cannot be used with grapefruit. These interactions are particularly important for drugs that have narrow therapeutic widths, where even the slightest increase in serum concentrations can cause the difference between therapeutic effect and toxicity. Experts explain that the effect of one tablet (which interacts with the grapefruit) is approximately equal to the effect of 20 tablets of this drug. Scientists are investigating whether alcohol enters into interaction with the calcium channel blocker – felodipine, with the grapefruit juice, is used to mask the unpleasant taste of alcohol. It has been reported that the concentration of the drug in the blood has increased several times compared to previous studies of this drug. This increase is caused other adverse drug reactions, such as increased blood pressure reduction and further studies have shown that grapefruit alone can increase the level of drug in the blood.
Compounds in grapefruit, furanocoumarin derivatives, inhibit some enzymes, thus changing the metabolism of certain drugs (FactsandComparisons Friend, 2001). It has been shown that one glass of juice can cause maximum inhibitory effect, and the effect may take longer than 24 hours. Therefore, it is not recommended to consume grapefruit regularly for people who consume the medicines daily.
